The translucent space in the port welcomes visitors arriving on the island by boat. During the daytime, the letters that make up the roof cast shadows on the ground.

055  Lighthouse Keeper  Minouk Lim

The lighthouse at Ogijima Island is featured in the film Times of Joy and Sorrow directed by Keisuke Kinoshita. This work is based both on the story of the island as told in the film and on the way of life of real islanders. It is a work that throws new light on the island.

054  木島 路地壁畫企畫 wallalley / 男木島 路地壁画プロジェクト…/ Project for wall painting in lane, ogijima wallalley  眞壁陸二  Rikuji Makabe
「“wallalley” is a coined word that combines “wall” and “alley.” Installed on the exterior walls of houses, the outlines of the landscape are colorfully depicted in works made from discarded lumber and scrapped vessels collected on the island. Found in several places around the island, they have already become a part of the island scener
「wallalley」是結合「wall(牆壁)」和「alley(巷道)」的造句。

The first floor of the house is given over to a Shadow Picture Sound Theater, displaying projected shadows of the sound artworks that are playing automatically. In the Sound Artwork House on the second floor, multiple “sound objects” installed in the rafters and on the floor allow visitors to experience the sound effects in 3D.

The work seals the memories of the islanders in bottles that also contain small lights.

Maison de Urushi Project

A wooden house was renovated with the help of local lacquer craftsmen who applied traditional Kagawa lacquer techniques. Visitors can experience the rich depths of the black, white, red, and blue colors of Kagawa lacquer. Do not miss the information panels about the five lacquer techniques at the entrance.

Keisuke Yamaguchi

Inspired by the story of Noah’s Ark, this artwork has been installed by the sea. Painted blue and white to blend with the sea and sky, the ark with its four protrusions seems poised to walk across the water. The artist imagines the ark walking off toward Iwaki (a city in Tohoku affected by the March 2011 disasters), and uses the piece to express misfortune prayer for safety from natural disaster.

Dreaming of Blue    Regina Silveira   Brazil
「Clouds and blue sky appear as if embroidered on the façade of the Ogi school gym. The source of the image is the blue sky and light in Setouchi that impressed the artist deeply when she visited the island. It is also a manifestation of her wish to give the children a poetic experience.

With our JR Kansai 5-days pass, from Okayama, we took the train crossing the Setouchi sea to Takamatsu, Shikoku. There were ferries to departure to islands at the east of Setouchi from this port. I guessed, most of passengers took choices for Island Shodoshima, as numbers of works were set up on the island. Still, we liked to make our own plan, so Island Ogijima was the choice for us this time.

We loved the atmospheres of calm livings on the Island, soon as we arrived, although the majority residents were senior citizens and street cats. As well as, we loved the most of artworks on this island, which were in concepts and presentations. Moreover, we did spend delighted time there.
058 Akinorium, 062 Memory Bottle  and 063 Organ  are truly inspired me a lot.
